Free Weekends at the East Palo Alto YMCA: A Resident’s Guide and First-Look Review
Last month the Lewis and Joan Platt East Palo Alto Family YMCA (the Y) began offering free weekend services for all East Palo Alto residents, through a council-led initiative to use tax dollars to boost recreational services.
I had never worked out at a YMCA before, so I visited on a Saturday to see how the program works. My goal in this article is to show residents how the sign-up process works and share what the experience is like.
Hours
The YMCA is open to East Palo Alto residents on weekends during the following hours:
- Saturday: 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
- Sunday: 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Sign Up Process
The sign-up process was kind of slow — about 10 minutes each for me and my wife. At the front desk, I let the staff know I was an East Palo Alto resident and wanted to register. I showed my driver’s license with my EPA address (I also brought a utility bill just in case, but it wasn’t needed). After taking a photo, providing contact information, and signing a standard waiver, I received a physical membership card. I immediately added it to the YMCA of Silicon Valley iOS app, which displays a barcode so you don’t need to carry the plastic card.
Facilities
The Y has a full indoor gymnasium, an outdoor pool, and both indoor and outdoor fitness areas. I only photographed the gymnasium and pool, but the workout spaces looked clean, well-maintained, and welcoming.

Pool Experience
I spent my visit swimming in the outdoor pool, which was spotless and pleasantly warm. All lanes were being used when I arrived, but sharing a lane was easy until one opened up. The locker rooms were clean and spacious, though the walk from the lockers to the pool was longer than expected. One important tip: bring your own towel—none are provided.
Conclusion
Overall, I enjoyed my visit to the Y and plan to return for another swim. I’m not usually a gym person, but the free-access initiative made it easy to try something new. This City Council-supported program is a great opportunity for residents to explore local recreation, so go sign up, check it out for yourself, and let us know what you think.
